IRI Creates Offline Reorg Tool for Very Large Databases
Unload-Sort-Reload Wizard for Eclipse Automates RDB Reorgs
Melbourne, Fla. (February 10, 2012) – Innovative Routines International (IRI), Inc., a leading developer of big data transformation and data-centric protection software, has developed a standalone module in Eclipse that performs bulk, offline reorganizations of relational database tables. The "offline reorg wizard" is a graphical module in the IRI Workbench IDE that defines the interaction between IRI's Fast Extract (FACT) unload software, the CoSort high-performance sort package, and bulk load utilities for DB2, Oracle, Sybase, and SQL Server, facilitating the fastest possible reorganization of one or more tables at once.
"When it comes to reorganizing databases, external sequential file processes are much faster," said Don Purnhagen, a senior software and database engineer at IRI. Over time, data in large tables and indexes eventually become fragmented. "There is a lot of value for reorganizing the database because it increases table space and improves performance and query response times," Purnhagen added.
The offline reorg wizard exports database objects into a temporary file (unload), re-orders them on the primary key of the table, and then returns to the same tablespace (load), where indexes are restored implicitly (rebuild).More specifically, the wizard exploits IRI's FACT software to rapidly unload tables to flat files for CoSort to sort (and optionally, transform in other ways, and report upon at the same time), and the database bulk load utility to rapidly re-populate its tables en masse. Pre-sorted, direct path loads bypass the sort (overhead) of the database loader, and other tables in the database can remain on-line during this process.
The Reorg Wizard facilitates the specification and execution of multiple, large-scale reorgs, and preludes the delivery of end-to-end data integration and extract, transform, load (ETL) operations for big data. According to IRI Business Development VP David Friedland, "superior performance results are seen at both the individual task and overall operational levels. Ergonomically, this new wizard is just another helpful tool in what is a fully-integrated IRI Workbench for handling big, structured data in data warehouse, data migration, and BI operations."
About IRI, The CoSort Company
